The play "Boris, Milena, Radko”, the production of which we will follow, was written by Dusan Jovanovic (74), one of the most renowned playwrights in Southeast Europe. His plays have been performed worldwide for fifty years, and have been given numerous awards, among which is the New York’s Off-Broadway’s Highest Honor, OBIE. This play, his latest one, will be directed by Dusan himself.
The main characters will be played by the actors for whom the play was commissioned and written: Milena Zupancic (67), Boris Cavazza (74), and Radko Polic (71). The three of them are, without exaggeration, the most famous actors-practically the cultural icons of Slovenia, one of the smallest countries in the European Union.
The play tells a story about three elderly people, former hippies, and now retirees.
In reality, actress Milena Zupancic, who plays the character of Milena, was married to actor Radko Polic, who plays the character of Radko. But then, many years ago, she left him in a rather noisy, publicly well-known episode, and started living with writer and director Dusan Jovanovic, the author of this play, who, according to some well-informed sources, is also represented in it, in the character of Boris, played by Boris Cavazza.
Apart from the names and the main plot, the play is not directly based on the actors’ and the director’s lives. At the same time, walking a fine line between the real and the imagined, the play makes us examine and compare the reality with the performance which is unfolding before our eyes.
In this film, that examination will take place on three levels:
On the first one, we will follow the production of the performance – the text itself, the read-through, and the stage rehearsals, all the way to the premiere. With a few breaks, this entire complex process will last four months. During that period, we will see all the key production phases and gain a deeper insight into the art of theatre.
On the second level, the film will tell the story about the play itself. It will tell the story of how it was written and how it is put on stage; how it is read, how it is rehearsed and how it is seen by the audience.
On the third level, the film will tell a story about the actors’ and the director’s private lives. It will reveal their personalities and their life accomplishments. Moreover, it will, with their help, try to reconstruct the events that took place between them many years ago and to discover how much of that experience is built in the performance they are making.
The first and the third level of the film will be documentary, while the second will be fictional. The combination of the two will create a hybrid, which is the most accurate form that can tell a story of fiction and fact.
